DESCRIPTION:The latest in an excellent ongoing series on artistic practice\, sustainability\, and the practicalities of a creative life. Drawing from the panellist’s individual experiences\, the discussion will explore collaboration\, visibility\, creative development\, navigating local and international scenes\, and the opportunities and challenges artists currently face while working in the country. On the panel are three musicians who feature in upcoming Arts Center shows: \nFatima\, a singer-songwriter whose storytelling performances blend R&B and soul with Arabian jazz.\nMINOVA\, indie electronic producer and singer. She performs at the Arts Center in a double bill with Fatima on 13 June.\nYahael Camara Onono – percussionist\, composer\, musical director\, educator\, and cultural producer\, founder and bandleader of the award-winning Balimaya Project: his show is on 11 June. \nThe talk will be moderated by Bill Bragin\, Executive Artistic Director of The Arts Center.

DESCRIPTION:Jean-Paul is not a bad guy by any means\, but he is going through a rough patch – pp to his ears in debts\, he pulls away from his family and takes refuge in the bottle. But\, inside\, he dreams of adventure; and he projects these fantasies onto the Vendée Globe\, the famous single-handed\, round-the-world yacht race\, an event which he sort-of took part in … by sitting in front of his computer and joining Virtual Regatta (alongside a million other internet users). This time round\, he decides to take the virtual challenge seriously – it does after all have a €150\,000 prize for the winner – and he elects to confine himself to the boat parked in the garden of his restaurant for three whole months. Jean-Paul equips himself with all the gear – wind turbine\, a solar panel\, food rations\, medical supplies – under the dubious but loving eyes of his father and daughter. And then the day of the departure arrives … \nIn French with English subtitles. The film screens as part of the NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that screens independent films which highlight socially relevant themes.

DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
