SUMMARY:Sharjah Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:magpie has long been a fan of the Sharjah Light Festival\, the 14th edition of which runs 3 to 15 February. By contrast with the newer Manar Abu Dhabi and Dhai Dubai light art festivals\, SLF generally takes a more conventional approach – which typically means illuminating iconic cultural (and some natural) landmarks\, albeit with active light shows. \nThis year’s Sharjah Light Festival features light shows in 13 locations\, and there’s clearly been a deliberate effort to spread them beyond Sharjah City. Locally there are shows at Dr Sultan Al Qassimi Center near University City Hall\, Al Majaz Waterfront\, Kalba Waterfront\, the General Souq at Al Hamriyah\, Al Jada\, and the House of Wisdom. And it should be worth making the trips to Al Rafisah Dam\, Al Dhaid Fort\, Khorfakkan Waterfall\, the Hanging Gardens in Kalba\, Dibba’s AlTayari Mosque\, and Sharjah Fort in Al Hisn.  \nThere’s also the Light Village in front of the University City Hall building\, which will have around 55 F&B and retail vendors plus entertainment and activities. That stays open till 22 February. \n

SUMMARY:Animenia Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:Animenia returns to Manarat Al Saadiyat with five days of cosplay\, music\, food\, and J-pop culture – “step inside a world inspired by the hidden corners of Neo-Tokyo\, where glowing signs\, colourful characters\, and offbeat discoveries bring anime culture to life … An unmissable anime celebration unlike anything fans have experienced before …” There’s a cosplay competition with big prizes\, an ‘artists alley’ where people will try to sell you stuff like rare collectibles\, “delicious bites inspired by authentic Japanese street food” (so not actual authentic Japanese street food then and the chance to find “creators whose work has already taken over your feed”. The last Animenia was a load of fun\, if you like this kind of thing. \nIt’s open 4pm to midnight (3pm-midnight on Saturday and Sunday) with single day entry costing AED 95 (AED 145 on 13 and 14 Feb). A five-day Festival Pass is AED 495.

SUMMARY:Nazilya Nagimova: Follow the Snail
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the Emirates for the Münster-based Tatar artist Nazilya Nagimova brings together new works created specifically for her solo project at NIKA Project Space\, plus selections from earlier projects. \nNagimova explores memory\, migration\, and the search for belonging\, and these works share a thematic core: the artist’s ongoing experiments with felt (a traditional material of her ancestors)\, her engagement with the long histories of Tatar mobility and settlement\, and the idea of home as a mobile\, vulnerable\, and constantly transforming structure. Says the gallery: “The exhibition unfolds as a reflection on the fragility of shelter and on how personal and collective memory shape our intimate relationship to place and community”. \nTo 4 April. \nAbove: Nazilya Nagimova\, Jort\, White (2025)

SUMMARY:63Kolektib: Metro Diaries
DESCRIPTION:Reprise of a show commissioned by the NYUAD Arts Center and first performed there last summer\, Metro Diaries invites audiences to step into a world that reflects the rhythm of daily metro rides through evocative performances that blend spoken word\, dance\, and live soundscapes; the experience unfolds in vignettes that capture fleeting connections\, moments of solitude\, and the universal search for belonging. Passengers board\, interact\, and part ways\, each carrying a story; some encounters are lighthearted\, filled with warmth and curiosity\, while others reveal the deeper struggles and resilience of migrant communities. At its core\, Metro Diaries is a meditation on loss\, hope\, and grounding – three universals that bind us all\, whether on a train or through life. \n63Kolektib is an artist-led community based on a shared passion for storytelling\, movement\, and cross-disciplinary collaboration for performances that amplify underrepresented voices\, particularly those of migrant communities in the UAE; through projects like Metro Diaries\, the collective strives to make theatre accessible\, using public spaces as a canvas for social reflection and dialogue. \nThere are shows today at 2pm and 7pm\, with two performances tomorrow (15 February) at midday and 4pm.

SUMMARY:Family Day at 421
DESCRIPTION:A day full of gallery adventures\, stories\, and hands-on activities for families. It begins with a collective exploration of the idea of ‘ripples’\, riffing on the current 421 exhibition Rays\, Ripples\, Residue; the tour concludes with a reading of Colorful Leaps with curator Munira Al Sayegh on the Bait15 Bed\, an artwork within the exhibition. \nAfterwards there are drop-in activities taking place across 421. Early Starters is hosting creative sessions in Studio 2 & 3 and the Courtyard\, while Studio Play transforms into a hands-on Yallah Play experience led by Hannah Phillips with “sensory stations” and creative activities. \n421 says it’s a day made for kids “but with plenty for grown-ups to enjoy too”.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Imagined Selves – Writing Identity Through Absence\, Objects & Memory
DESCRIPTION:This two-hour writing workshop engages directly with Bady Dalloul’s ongoing exhibition Self-Portrait with a Cat I don’t have\, inviting participants to explore how objects\, the concept of home and experiences of migration inform personal and cultural identity. It includes guided writing and observation exercises\, focusing on how to articulate what is seen in the artwork and what remains unseen in personal histories; attendees have the opportunity to contribute a short piece of writing to a collaborative digital zine that will be assembled and produced on site following the workshop. \nThe workshop is open to adults\, with no prior writing experience required. It will be led by Ladane Nasseri\, a writer and editor with a background in journalism and literary nonfiction.

SUMMARY:Kavan
DESCRIPTION:The second performance (of three) for this interesting collaboration between the Mumbai-based music and street theatre group Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch and the Nalanda Arts Studio from Bangalore. Kavan is described as an ‘Ambedkarite Opera’ – Ambedkarism being the set of anti-caste ideas associated with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (1891-1956)\, an Indian economist\, barrister\, social reformer\, and political thinker and activist. \nThe storyline\, which is carried exclusively in poetry and song (hence the ‘opera’ tag)\, concerns a young man called Bejul and his journey to becoming a Shahir\, a politically-aware performance poet; it’s a path from acceptance of the status quo\, including compliance with the social norms like gender and caste\, to a gradual realisation that many of the constraints in his life are actually man-made and not predetermined. Although the caste system provides the framework\, the piece can be seen as more generally about deep-rooted inequalities in society – “and every society has such inequalities” as the director Abhishek Majumdar told us. \nRead our backgrounder here. There is a final performance of Kavan on Sunday 15 February at 2pm.

SUMMARY:Le Songe d'une nuit d'été
DESCRIPTION:A francophone Midsummer Night’s Dream\, directed by Culture Emulsion’s main man Stéphane Brismontier and featuring CE’s theatre school players – around a dozen of them\, which should make for a fun show on the Junction’s stage. It’s described as “d’après l’oeuvre de William Shakespeare”\, so we’re expecting an adaptation that hopefully omits some of the duller jokes and makes the most of the “mismatched lovers\, quarrelling royals\, mischievous sprites\, and a delightfully disastrous troupe of amateur actors”.  Culture Emulsion rarely disappoints … \nThere’s a second show tomorrow (15 February).
