SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: Garden of Murmurs
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s body of work delves into his Iraqi heritage\, while bridging painting\, drawing and fibre art – “reconciling the tactility of textiles with a sensitive examination of form”\, as the gallery puts it. “Focusing primarily on the male figure drawn to a scale slightly larger than life-size\, Kydd has developed a poetic dialogue between material\, identity\, and culture.” His use of natural materials adds another dimension to the works; so sage\, used for dyeing\, is not only part of the creative process but also a spiritual practice grounded in both tradition and personal exploration. Kydd’s use of mixed media – oil\, pastel\, charcoal\, natural dyes – enhances this interplay.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Architectures of the In-Between
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring Nevine Hamza\, Atefeh Majidi Nezhad\, and Layla Juma. Says the gallery: “Each artist navigates the threshold between structure and sentiment\, material and memory\, between what is seen and what is sensed …” \nHamza’s work draws on her background in design to transform metaphysical ideas into “atmospheric visual compositions that float between sky and ground … using architectural elements to explore the boundaries between earth and sky\, the tangible and the intangible” (see above). Nezhad’s installations offer a more tactile investigation of space; her Zero-Gseries employs delicate lace and translucent materials that appear suspended in midair\, confronting the viewer with a sense of both weightlessness and intimacy.  And Juma’s minimalist geometries use a language of form and repetition that translates social structures into visual rhythm – through drawing\, installation\, and sculpture\, Juma assembles and dissembles patterns to reveal coded systems and moments of alignment.

SUMMARY:Thinking through Space: Curatorial Methods and Tools [day one]
DESCRIPTION:Now this looks interesting: a two-day workshop (23-24 August) that offers a practical and reflective entry point into contemporary curatorial practice\, showing how an initial idea can evolve into a coherent\, site-responsive exhibition. Through a series of guided exercises\, attendees will learn how to map out a topic\, trace thematic threads\, draw connections between artworks\, and shape clear\, compelling curatorial concepts that respond to audience and context. There’s a physical element too; ideas can be translated into engaging exhibition designs by working with the architecture of the space as well as elements such as light\, sound and texture. \nIt looks ideal for aspiring curators but would also be useful for emerging artists. The workshop is led by Sharjah-based curator May Alqaydi\, whose curatorial practice “is shaped by a sensitivity to material\, place and narrative form\, focusing particularly on experimental exhibition formats and spatial storytelling that move between the visible and the concealed …” \nAll materials will be provided It’s free\, but spaces are obviously limited and pre-registration is essential.

SUMMARY:The Laughter Factory Standup Comedy Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The final gig for the August Laughter Factory tour has four acts\, all good: \nDimitri Bakanov is a UK-based half-Russian\, half-Ukrainian comedian who has gigged all over the world with a tight\, slick routine – “dark\, charming and never far from a quality punchline” as one notice put it \nRoman Harris started gigging six years ago and almost immediately got a spot on the British TV game show Supermarket  Sweep. His style mixes anecdotal and observational comedy with a quirky take on his personal life\, relationships and random experiences \nAsh Rose is well known to local audiences as the UAE’s only Stand-up Magician. His timing\, crowd work\, wit\, charm\, outrageously good looks and modesty all define him as a leader in his field (it says here) … \nNoha Bashir (“face of an angel\, mouth of a sailor”) is a rising star of the regional comedy scene who recently had successful tours in the UK and Egypt. A magpie favourite\, and highly recommended as one to watch
