SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:Shrek the Musical
DESCRIPTION:Matinée and evening shows for the Abu Dhabi Choral Group’s Summer Revue\, a “hilarious and heartwarming” adaptation of the popular film. The grumpy but lovable ogre embarking on a quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona for the scheming Lord Farquaad; along the way\, Shrek is joined by a lively cast of fairytale characters\, including his wisecracking sidekick Donkey. There’s a message – “they challenge stereotypes\, discover the meaning of friendship\, and prove that beauty lies within … Shrek The Musical celebrates individuality and self-acceptance” but it’s the jokes\, the repartee\, the songs and the sheer fun that will get you applauding for encores … \nThere are shows at 2pm and 7.30pm\, with a final performance on 1 June at 2pm.

This series marks an introspective shift in his practice\, reflecting his evolving sense of place in the world; HOME: Heart of My Existence consists of 13 large-scale works that reimagine home not as a fixed location\, but as something carried within\, “a space shaped by memory\, emotion\, and personal understanding” …

SUMMARY:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: Garden of Murmurs
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s body of work delves into his Iraqi heritage\, while bridging painting\, drawing and fibre art – “reconciling the tactility of textiles with a sensitive examination of form”\, as the gallery puts it. “Focusing primarily on the male figure drawn to a scale slightly larger than life-size\, Kydd has developed a poetic dialogue between material\, identity\, and culture.” His use of natural materials adds another dimension to the works; so sage\, used for dyeing\, is not only part of the creative process but also a spiritual practice grounded in both tradition and personal exploration. Kydd’s use of mixed media – oil\, pastel\, charcoal\, natural dyes – enhances this interplay. \nSays the gallery: “Through his use of natural materials\, sacred symbolism\, and an intimate engagement with the figure\, and by rejecting over-contextualization of his works\, Kydd invites the viewer to engage with his narratives on a deeply emotional and intellectual level\, challenging assumptions and creating space for empathy\, understanding\, and reflection.” \nTo 23 August. \nAbove: Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd\, They Invaded at Night (2025)

SUMMARY:Nazgol Ansarinia: Instruments of Viewing an Obscurity
DESCRIPTION:Recent projects from the Tehran-born artist. Nazgol Ansarinia’s work examines the systems and networks that underpin her daily life – from everyday objects to routines\, events and experiences. She’s interested in the relationships they form to make up a larger social context. Ansarinia’s practice reflects upon tensions between private worlds and the wider socioeconomic realm\, and “how local iterations of a culture might act as a site for the hopes and fears of those living in a (faltering) globalised world” as the gallery puts it. This exhibition of recent work ranges across sculpture\, installation\, drawing\, and video\, representing ways of understanding the role of architecture in delineating interior and exterior spaces and private and public spheres. \nTo 30 August. \nAbove: Nazgol Ansarinia\, Private Waters (2020)

SUMMARY:Omar Al Gurg: Everyman’s Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The Emirati artist and designer’s inaugural solo exhibition comprises a series of photographs that documents the striking ecological diversity of Mount Kilimanjaro. Captured through Al Gurg’s attentive and empathetic gaze during a six-day journey in 2021\, this work offers “a nuanced exploration of the mountain as a living\, evolving ecosystem shaped by natural forces and human presence … His images reveal the mountain’s layered habitats\, from mist-laden forests and regenerating moorlands affected by recent fires to the fragile ice caps near the summit … At the heart of Everyman’s Mountain lies a meditation on scale and significance”. \nEveryman’s Mountain is not about conquest but about process: the act of seeing\, appreciating\, and bearing witness. The gallery says “It is a visual testament to resilience\, vulnerability\, and the quiet beauty found in the mountain’s every detail\, encouraging us all to engage with the natural world through a lens of humility and stewardship”. \nTo 12 September.

SUMMARY:Ahmad Kasha: Offerings – The War Series
DESCRIPTION:Ahmad Kasha’s complete War Series (2018–2025) is presented here for the first time in association with Fann à Porter. Influenced by various traditions of war art\, the series reflects on the psychological toll of violence on people\, animals\, nature\, and in the essence of art across time; Kasha has tendered this meditation on the condition of humanity in the shadow of war through arresting colour palettes and large-scale paintings which convey both fragility and overwhelming violence. To 14 June. \nAbove: Ahmad Kasha\, Siege (2018-2020). Courtesy of the Artist and Fann À Porter

SUMMARY:Architectures of the In-Between
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring Nevine Hamza\, Atefeh Majidi Nezhad\, and Layla Juma. Says the gallery: “Each artist navigates the threshold between structure and sentiment\, material and memory\, between what is seen and what is sensed …” \nHamza’s work draws on her background in design to transform metaphysical ideas into “atmospheric visual compositions that float between sky and ground … using architectural elements to explore the boundaries between earth and sky\, the tangible and the intangible” (see above). Nezhad’s installations offer a more tactile investigation of space; her Zero-Gseries employs delicate lace and translucent materials that appear suspended in midair\, confronting the viewer with a sense of both weightlessness and intimacy.  And Juma’s minimalist geometries use a language of form and repetition that translates social structures into visual rhythm – through drawing\, installation\, and sculpture\, Juma assembles and dissembles patterns to reveal coded systems and moments of alignment. \nTo 23 August.

SUMMARY:Hans Zimmer Live
DESCRIPTION:Hans Zimmer is probably best known for some of the most listened-to soundtracks in the history of cinema – The Lion King\, Gladiator\, Pirates of the Caribbean\, The Dark Knight\, Dune – but his live show is also pretty special. It features new arrangements from the Oscar-winning composer’s stellar back catalogue\, recreated on stage by Zimmer himself (he’s an excellent keyboardist and plays a mean guitar) with a large orchestra and choir. He’s done sold-out shows in Dubai\, including a couple this time last year\, but this is hist first visit to the capital. Recommended. \nThere’s a second show tomorrow (1 June). \n
