SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:Shrek the Musical
DESCRIPTION:The always excellent Abu Dhabi Choral Group\, the city’s best-established and best-regarded community theatre company\, offers this “hilarious and heartwarming” adaptation of the popular film\, a successful Broadway and West End musical (music by Jeanine Tesori\, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire). It’s based on the first film\, albeit with elements of the sequels: so we have the grumpy but lovable ogre embarking on a quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona for the scheming Lord Farquaad. Along the way\, Shrek is joined by a lively cast of fairytale characters\, including his wisecracking sidekick Donkey. There’s a message – “they challenge stereotypes\, discover the meaning of friendship\, and prove that beauty lies within … Shrek The Musical celebrates individuality and self-acceptance” but it’s the jokes\, the repartee\, the songs and the sheer fun that will get you applauding for encores … \nThere are further shows on 30 and 31 May at 7.30pm and on 31 May and 1 June at 2pm.

SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs is back after a couple of months’ hiatus: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for an iftar (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\,but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:Echoes of Earth – Nature Voices in Motion\, Sound and Light
DESCRIPTION:An “immersive performance” that blends classical music\, theatrical narrative and video projections “to awaken the senses and inspire environmental consciousness … in a powerful celebration of the natural world and a moving reflection on the collective responsibility to protect it”. Created by environmentalist Cyril Escaravage in association with clarinetist and composer Stéphane Ferrault\, both of whom feature in the performance (as actor and musician respectively)\, Echoes of Earth includes works by Debussy\, Chopin\, Ravel and Glass. \nEscaravage has quoted Erik Orsena in outlining his approach  “Before we understand\, we have to explain. To explain\, you have to marvel. To marvel\, you have to tell”. He says it’s the spectacle of marvelling at nature’s beauties and mysteries\, to explain what is happening before our eyes\, and to show that we can act … \nPresented in partnership with Emirates Nature—WWF\, Climate Fresk\, and Chalhoub Group and previously been performed at Dubai College and the Theatre of Digital Art (ToDA)\, the event marks a major moment in SUAD’s initiatives for 2025 being designated the Year of Ocean.
