SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hazem Harb: Not There\, Yet Felt
DESCRIPTION:Unlike earlier works that centred around collective narratives\, this new body of work from Hazem Harb is highly personal and intimate; it aims to draw the viewer into Harb’s own lived environment\, reflecting his sense of disembodiment\, a feeling of being simultaneously connected to and distanced from his home. ‘Peeling’ is a central metaphor to reveal layered memories and histories embedded within the walls of Harb’s Gaza home; through evocative collage\, neon installation\, and a poignant self-portrait\, the artist raises themes of displacement\, memory\, and our emotional and physical connections to home.

SUMMARY:Parasite: dir Bong Joon Ho (2019)
DESCRIPTION:The South Korean smash hit and multi award winner (including the Cannes Palme d’Or in 2019 and a Best Picture Oscar) is a black comedy thriller: it follows the street-smart Kim family scamming their way into the household of the Park family\, the epitome of aspirational wealth. It’s widely regarded as a critique of late-stage capitalism; it’s also very funny\, in an agreeably dark way\, and features an impactful soundtrack by Jung Jae-il. … \nThis film screens as part of the ninth edition of the Korean Film Festival\, presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Cultural Center. This year’s festival has the theme ‘Music’ and showcases a selection of Korean films that highlight the power of music in storytelling. \n

SUMMARY:Making of: dir Cédric Kahn (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Cinema has always been very interested in itself. In Cédric Kahn’s Making of we are introduced to a movie\, a story about workers fighting to protect their factory from being relocated. And we meet a variety of characters involved in it – there is the director (Denis Podalydes) who can’t seem to get everything into place\, the producer (Emmanuelle Bercot) who wants to rewrite the ending and cut the budget\, the veteran lead actor (Jonathan Cohen) who is a diva on set\,and the budding director (Stefan Crepon) who has been commissioned to shoot a behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ documentary. \nThe result makes for a satisfyingly complex fly-on-the-wall comedy\, with a large ensemble cast of French actors having fun with the long list of roles. There’s a nod to social topics too; the issues discussed in the film-within-a-film – underpaid workers\, torn labourers\, possibilities of losing work – all mirror the stressed film crew trying to just finish this production. And it’s timely\, given the strikes that have been going on in Hollywood recently … \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25\, the rest of us pay AED 35. \n
