SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
DESCRIPTION:The third performance for this four-day run of the West End hit – all 37 of the bard’s plays\, condensed into 97 minutes of fast-paced comedy\, silliness\, audience participation\, and “just the right amount of innuendo”. Look out for Othello as a rap song\, the History plays as a gridiron football game\, Titus Andronicus as a cooking show … Robbie Capaldi\, Christopher Laishley\, and James Gulliford are the actors who take on the task (yup\, just three of them) in this production directed by John Payton. \nThere are shows at 2pm and 8pm.

SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:The final performances of this ballet reinterpretation of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana by the Ballet of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor\, with choreography by Edward Clug The original is of course a 20th-century choral classic that draws inspiration from medieval verse and taps into timeless human themes of hope\, love\, and destiny; Clug has sought to highlight this\, especially finding what he describes as “parallelism between the cycles of nature\, especially during the spring awakening of nature\, and human life and lust …”. There are performances at 5pm and 8pm\, and you can get tickets at half price if you use promocode BALLET50 when checking out.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Elias Sime: Through the Window
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the Middle East for the Addis Ababa artist showcases Sime’s distinctive practice of transforming colourful wires\, circuit boards\, and electronic components into intricate\, layered compositions that blur the boundaries between technology\, nature\, and abstraction. \nThe title ‘Through The Window’ speaks to both literal and metaphorical apertures that frame perception\, whether through architecture or digital screens. His layered\, textured surfaces recall aerial landscapes\, circuit pathways\, and organic topographies\, offering a meditation on interconnectedness and the materials that shape our digital world.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Maryam Hoseini: Swells
DESCRIPTION:The second solo exhibition at this gallery for the Iran-born\, NY-based artist features new paintings that revels in transplanting elements within themselves. Hoseini says “the figures have moved from architecture to landscape”; so the flat figure expands and multiplies in rounded limb\, breast\, buttock\, organ\, and thigh … Ground\, now rectangular\, sometimes rounded\, is repossessed by this swell. It grows as if vegetal. Devouring itself\, boring into the wood panel’s visible\, soaked\, grain like a termite\, the figure makes of such pictorial amplification a carnal feast …”

SUMMARY:MyLysses
DESCRIPTION:How do contemporary artists grapple with the shifting role of text\, literature and knowledge in an age of AI? This group exhibition curated by Tor Seidel tries to answer that question. As Seidel puts it\, “Has access to texts and images become so easy that we must ask ourselves what we still read\, write\, and know? What influence do these texts written by AI agents have on visual productions\, and how enduringly do they shape what was once conceived of as collective memory? … In this exhibition\, we have invited artists whose works engage with classical literature\, examine scientific imagery within the context of its interpretation\, engage in\nconversations with AI identities\, or consider machine sounds as creators of independent poetics”. \nThe artists: \nAbdulghani Alanahawi\nBrian Gonzales\nBao Li\nMarcel Buehler\nDaniela Friebel\nMutasim Al Kubaisi\nJens Lystraeten\nChristiana De Marchi\nUnaiza Ismail\nIsaac Sullivan\nTor Seidel\nCharlie Koolhaas\nShahad Mohamed AlBlooshi \nTo 30 June.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mayar Obeido: Ever in Reform
DESCRIPTION:While his previous work was embedded with themes of time\, context\, and the mutual influence of elements\, Fann À Porter’s second solo exhibition for Syrian artist Mayar Obeido introduces a focus towards place\, location\, and grounding. The artist navigates a state of shifting environments and fragmentation\, where borders and limits are suddenly flexible\, reflecting the inherent tension between stability and transformation.
