SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Michael Sailstorfer: Air Electric
DESCRIPTION:Sailstorfer’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery brings together three series of works that explore one of the artist’s signature themes: energy. He reflects on energy in its various forms – as a source\, as storage\, as a transmitter\, as working material – in short\, as fuel for life. \nThe sculptural series C-Batterie plays with notions of classical sculpture such as eternity\, uniqueness and preconceived values. At first glance\, the five bronze casts on white pedestals seem to fulfil these ideas: but is this really the case? Referencing Joseph Beuys’ Capri-Batterie (1985)\, Sailstorfer creates wax models of the original Capri battery\, places them in beehives\, leaves the bees to work on them for a few months\, and then removes the moulds to cast bronzes from them. The results feels as if nature has taken over\, destabilising and questioning the so-called balance while capturing the transience and the creative energy of the moment. \nAnother set of casts made from ordinary lightbulbs\, using the same process\, are suspended from the ceiling with reference to their original function. \nSailstorfer’s latest series – Air Electric\, from which the exhibition takes its title – turns electricity into his painting medium. A power supply unit provides a constant flow of direct current that ‘paints’ silver on to copper mesh; the result is an abstract\, electric landscape of pale blue cloud formations against a golden sky. Occasionally\, certain\nshapes can be made out through the web of clouds\, but the interpretation of the work is ultimately left to\nthe viewer. \nThe final work in the exhibition is an addition to Sailstorfer’s Tank series (2020 on). Tank 11 (2024\, above) consists of an empty Audi fuel tank\, deprived of its original function and context; the tank takes on anthropomorphic features\, reminiscent of oceanic masks from a bygone era. The sound of breathing fills the last part of the room\, reminding us that energy in any given form is always fuel for life.

SUMMARY:The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
DESCRIPTION:The third performance for this four-day run of the West End hit – all 37 of the bard’s plays\, condensed into 97 minutes of fast-paced comedy\, silliness\, audience participation\, and “just the right amount of innuendo”. Look out for Othello as a rap song\, the History plays as a gridiron football game\, Titus Andronicus as a cooking show … Robbie Capaldi\, Christopher Laishley\, and James Gulliford are the actors who take on the task (yup\, just three of them) in this production directed by John Payton. \nThere are further shows at 2pm and 8pm on 24 May.

SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:The noted choreographer Edward Clug has managed a powerful and poignant reinterpretation of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana for this production by the Ballet of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor\, which has received generally enthusiastic reviews en route to Dubai . \nThe original is of course a 20th-century choral classic that draws inspiration from medieval verse and taps into timeless human themes of hope\, love\, and destiny; Clug has sought to highlight this\, especially finding what he describes as “parallelism between the cycles of nature\, especially during the spring awakening of nature\, and human life and lust … It is the awakening of lust in the young body\, which longs for the forbidden and unattainable (fruit)\, that represents the movement tension of the journey through twenty-four ‘songs’. \n“The shape that spontaneously emerged was a circle that coincided with the circle of fortune from the first song of O Fortuna and was created by thirty dancers\, each of whom aspired to the core of this perfect natural form. The narrower the circle\, the more tension and force permeates its core.” \nThis is Dubai Opera’s last ballet of the season\, and you can get tickets at half price if you use promocode BALLET50 when checking out. There are further shows tomorrow (24 May) at 5pm and 8pm.
