SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Adrian Pepe: A Shroud is a Cloth
DESCRIPTION:Adrian Pepe’s poetic meditation on fragmentation and renewal gets an extended run at NIKA Project Space. It uses a monumental 200m2 woollen textile piece that previously wrapped a building damaged in the 2020 Beirut Port explosion to highlight the relationship between materials\, cultural landscapes\, and ecological intimacy\, “challenging the rigid demarcations between art\, labor\, nature\, and performance through a textile medium” as the gallery has it. \nThe works in this show\, all derived from a single source\, range in scale from intimate to monumental. Wool – cleansed\, processed\, manipulated\, and recontextualised – becomes a vessel for gestures\, images\, and rituals. Debris extracted from it – dirt\, seeds\, remnants of vegetable matter – captures the landscape within the material. Stitching\, felting\, and acts of assembly transform these materials into new compositions\, reflecting on material processes\, ecological intimacy\, and the fragility of being. “Wool has this capacity to hold time – it is resilient yet malleable\, intimate yet expansive\,” says Pepe. “In this exhibition\, I am exploring how materials are never neutral; they shape\, and are shaped by care\, labor\, and the environments they inhabit.”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Laura Garcia Karras: Eidolon
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by that French artist that explores “the spectral space between presence and absence\, giving form to what lingers just beyond perception” (the ancient Greek word ‘eidolon’ means phantom\, double\, or apparition). \nKarras’s works appear as delicate traces of something once vivid\, now fading\, like the echo of a body or the glimmer of a vanishing dream; the exhibition becomes a meditation on memory\, loss\, and the persistence of desire. As Karras writes: “We live surrounded by ghosts. Bodies fade\, but leave imprints. Desire wanes\, yet its echo remains. Artifice dazzles\, but beneath its glow\, matter disintegrates”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Flower Shop
DESCRIPTION:A group show – with Maria Andrievskaya\, Almendra Bertoni\, Katie Hector\, Jen Hitchings\, and John Denniston II– that invites us to think of colour not just as a visual element but as a language of its own. “Colour is what makes the world visible\, yet its perception is deeply personal. Does a vibrant burst of red or the delicate fade of blue appear the same to everyone? Or does each of us experience a slightly different reality?” The five artists “push the boundaries of how we see and feel colour”; the show’s title “was born from a fleeting yet vivid moment—passing by a florist and being struck by the explosion of hues\, an everyday spectacle that suddenly revealed itself as something more …”

SUMMARY:Zhou Song: Supernatural·Algorithm
DESCRIPTION:Zhou Song’s solo show echoes traditional Chinese landscape painting but employs symbolic imagery to explore relationships between nature\, technology\, and faith. The ‘anthropomorphic tree’ is central\, serving as a metaphor for nature’s alienation by technology – “these trees retain natural forms while merging with human features\, hinting at a future possibility: as algorithms silently infiltrate every corner of nature\, can it preserve its primal purity? Or will it inevitably fuse with human civilisation\, becoming an entirely new entity?” Song’s ‘Pencil trees’\, by contrast\, symbolise a primordial state. Their delicate lines and soft hues evoke tranquillity and harmony; yet pencils are also tools that embody human wisdom and carry the memory of civilisation. ‘Twisted candles’\, another key element\, suggest light\, hope\, and faith – but they are not just metaphors for religion and belief but profound meditations on hope and rebirth. They remind us that faith and hope remain even under technological upheaval. It’s a technologically transformed natural world that witnesses the collision of nature and technology and contemplates the future of humanity and faith … To 17 June.

SUMMARY:Moon Is The Oldest TV: dir Amanda Kim (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Kim’s documentary profiles the career of Nam June Paik and his pioneering contributions to video art. A timely meditation on the contradictory ways in which technology elicits both fascist tendencies and intercultural understanding\, the film charts Paik’s artistic evolution with an extensive archive of performance footage\, original interviews from Paik’s contemporaries and collaborators\, and a voiceover of Nam June Paik’s writings. \nIt screens alongside the current Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition of South Korean art from the last six decades\, which riffs on Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’ where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries.

SUMMARY:Les Quatre Cents Coups | The 400 Blows: dir François Truffaut (1959)
DESCRIPTION:Truffaut’s largely autobiographical coming-of-age drama is the classic French New Wave film and utterly unmissable. In the first of many appearances with the director\, Jean-Pierre Léaud is a misunderstood 13-year-old living in a small\, uncomfortable Parisian apartment with his mother\, a sullen woman who doesn’t love him\, and the man who gave him his name but isn’t his father. As he grows older\, Antoine becomes increasingly unable to tolerate his situation and dreams of a better future. Petty theft and skipping school eventually leads him to court and then to a centre for troubled youths near the sea. He escapes and runs to the ocean\, which he has always wanted to see; he turns and looks at the camera in one of cinema’s finest final frames … \nIn French with English subtitles. This film screens as part of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Cannes Nights series\, inviting the audience to “experience the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival” in collaboration with the Institut Français. Screenings take place in the museum’s auditorium.

SUMMARY:The Temple
DESCRIPTION:As part of International Jazz Month in Abu Dhabi\, The Temple makes its public debut – an evening with some of the UAE’s most creative improvisers. It’s curated by Ratish Chadha\, who also plays in a couple of the slots. On the bill: \nABRI & The Everlasting is a band that’s difficult to confine to a single genre – it plays a blend of soul\, funk\, reggae\, afrobeat\, and jazz – but one that has established a rep as one of the most exciting live acts to come out of the region. \nAleksandra Krstic is an award winning pianist\, singer\, songwriter\, composer and music producer with degrees in classical music and performance and a style that includes funk and electronica as well as jazz; she cites inspiration from artists like Ella Fitzgerald\, Billie Holiday\, and Etta James to more contemporary examples such as Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. \nBeatbox Ray has more than 15 years of experience in music production and performance (he won the UAE Beatbox Championship as long ago as 2012). A beatboxer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and live looper with\, he’s known for crafting full compositions in real time and mixing them on the spot … \nBull Funk Zoo (aka Assaad Lakkis) is an artist/producer who fuses jazz with psychedelia\, funk\, and electronica. His latest album\, PY\, is Bull Funk Zoo at his best\, with an underlay of funk but with the unexpected rhythm shifts and driving energy. \nNOON are the kind of band that exemplifies the UAE – “an audio approximation of the Emirates’ cluttered cosmopolitanism and contemporary\, borderless ethos” as the blurb puts it\, with three players from different cultural and musical backgrounds who play ‘experimental Oriental’. “The effect is a little like a proggy\, jazz-rock power trio\, only with an oud where the electric guitar is supposed to be …” \nSanaa & The Rhythmic Circle is a seven-piece band led by Ghanaian bassist and composer Opoku Sanaa. They play a distinctive fusion of jazz with New Age vibes\, African rhythms\, and Gospel overtones. For this performance we’re promised “an intimate\, immersive experience of original compositions\, improvisation\, and storytelling”. \nSandra Ivette is a Cuban musician\, singer/songwriter and music teacher with a unique blend of musical influences and proficiency in viola\, piano\, bass and double bass to add to the mix. A talented songwriter\, she has a distinctive Caribbean style that’s blended with classical and contemporary influences. \nShilpa Ananth is a singer-songwriter (and Berklee alumna) who has managed to create a distinctive blend of South Indian rhythms with influences from soul\, electronica and jazz\, not least by weaving songs that incorporate Tamil\, Malayalam\, Hindi and English. \n

SUMMARY:L'histoire de Souleymane | The Story of Souleymane: dir Boris Lojkine (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Souleymane is an asylum-seeker with two days to prepare for the interview that will determine his residence permit status. As he pedals through the streets of Paris delivering meals\, he relates his story; it’s one of violence and survival – but not in the way that the immigration interview requires. As the clock tuicks down\, the pace and the tension both pick up … Social realism story-telling at its best\, with elements of a gripping thriller. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes 2024\, and Abou Sangaré received the Best Actor Award in the Un Certain Regard section. \nIn French with English subtitles. This film is the last in the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s short Cannes Nights series\, inviting the audience to “experience the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival” in collaboration with the Institut Français.
