SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Now this should be one of the highlights of the UAE’s exhibition year\, not just because of the content – it’s subtitled explicitly ‘Contemporary Art from Korea\, 1960s to Today’\, and South Korea is home to some of the most interesting\, groundbreaking work of the last few decades years; and the exhibition design reflects that. \nThe exhibition is a selection of works from the Seoul Museum of Art\, curated by SeMA’s Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil for the Abu Dhabi Festival\, and it aims to cover the “legacy of material and conceptual combination\, exchange\, hybridity\, and innovation” in the radical Korean contemporary art scene. The title echoes Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’\, where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries; so the exhibition immerses the viewer in “the fluid intersections of consciousness\, technology\, and art”\, specifically showing “how artists work with varied technologies to intervene in\, interpret and mediate different scales of experience\, from the individual\, the archival and the collective\, to the abstract and yet to become …” \nIt opens with a curatorial discussion (5-6pm) featuring Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil with artists Byungjun Kwon and Choi Goen; that’s followed at 6.15pm with conversation between the co-curators and exhibition designers Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin from FormaFantasma. \nTo 30 June. \nAbove: Byungjun Kwon\, Dancing Ladders (2022) \n

SUMMARY:La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class
DESCRIPTION:This 45-minute play — first seen at the NYUAD Arts Center last autumn – is a joyful lesson in theatre and a tribute to the theatrical talent of Italians for connecting to anyone\, transcending language barriers. Set partly in English and partly in Italian (and without subtitles)\, the show ironically demolishes preconceived notions of the difficulty of theatre language and highlights how communication problems can be solved with theatrical bodywork \nThe plot is simple enough\, set in the tradition of the comedy of errors: an Italian actress (Francesca Bizzarri\, who also developed the piece) receives a student (played by Claudio Grilli) for a private drama lesson in her apartment; he is eager to learn the tricks of the trade\, she is thrilled at the idea of making him fall in love with Italian theatre. She sits him down and searches through her library\, preparing the ideal acting class for him – from Plautus to Pirandello via Dario Fo. The lesson falters on language problems\, and communication breaks down until the universal language of commedia dell’arte comes to the rescue …
