SUMMARY:A Room of One’s Own
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Duygu Demir\, NYUAD assistant professor of Art History and curator at the Art Gallery\, this exhibition features new work by current MFA students Maha Alasaker\, Yuehan Dai\, Nour Elbery\, Almaha Jaralla\, Tooba Shaikh\, and Shaima Shamsi that has been developed over the past year. A Room of One’s Own invites viewers to consider the possibilities that emerge when artists are given the freedom to create; the exhibition borrows its title from Virginia Woolf’s 1929 essay\, which argued that creative work requires both physical space and material support; the works on show reflect on personal and shared histories\, examining themes such as colonialism\, displacement\, systems of power\, environmental transformation\, and the boundaries\, mental and physical\, that define experience. To 25 May.

SUMMARY:Curators Talk: Nada Raza
DESCRIPTION:The latest in the NYUAD Art Gallery’s series of conversations with curators features Nada Raza\, Director of the Alserkal Arts Foundation. She’ll be giving an overview of her curatorial journey as a divided ‘South Asian’; her PhD was on transcultural connections\, particularly between the Gulf and South Asia\, which should make for an interesting perspective. She will also share her quite extensive experiences with commissioning and exhibiting art; she began her career in 2005 at The Third Line in Dubai\, moved to the international art curatorial team at Tate Modern\, came back to Dubai for a role as Curatorial Advisor at Alserkal Avenue and then as Alserkal Arts Foundatiuon’s director.
