SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:This year’s ADIBF – remarkably\, it’s the 34th edition – has the theme ‘Knowledge Illuminates our Community’\, a sentiment which brooks no argument. There are 90 participating countries\, the ‘Focus Personality’ is Avicenna (Ibn Sina)\, the ‘Book of the World’ is One Thousand and One Nights\, and the guest of honour\, usually a single nation\, is Culture of the Caribbean Basin. \nLast year there were more than 230\,000 visitors\, 1\,350 exhibitors\, and reportedly in excess of 1.5 million books sold. All those numbers should be beaten this time around; ADIBF is a genuine force in the booming regional publishing field\, and some clever extras – like a much-expanded ‘Podcast from Abu Dhabi‘ programme\, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award ceremony\, and a famously busy schedule of something like 2\,000 lectures\, panel discussions\, specialised workshops and other activities – make it a good bet for the reader as well as the publishing professional. \nThe book fair has been extended to ten days this year; it runs 9am to 10pm from 26 April to 5 May. Admission is free\, but you’ll need to pre-register.

SUMMARY:Sharjah Animation Conference
DESCRIPTION:SAC returns for its third annual edition\, again organised in collaboration with Italy’s Bergamo Animation Days (BAD)\, with an extensive (indeed\, impressive) programme of trends\, cutting-edge technologies\, and game-changing opportunities\, This year there’s a substantial Japanese influence – Studio Ghibli notables\, anime in many of the sessions\, an afternoon of cosplay … \nOverall\, it’s a chance for enthusiasts\, current and would-be professionals and industry folk to mingle with some of the world’s best animators – more than 70 of them\, say the organisers\, with the full list here. Headliners include Masayuki Miyaji and Tamiya Terashima\, both associated with Studio Ghibli; Tom Bancroft of Pencilish Animation Studios\, known for his work on Disney classics like Mulan and Aladdin; and the celebrated character designer Sandro Cleuzo\, known for Anastasia\, Tarzan\, and Chip’n Dale (his workshop predictably sold out early\, sadly\, and so has Bancroft’s). \nKhoula Al Mujaini\, Executive Director of SAC\, described animation as “a universal language that transcends borders\, cultures\, and generations … Through SAC\, we aim to celebrate this remarkable art form\, inspire new generations of creatives\, and provide a space where industry leaders can connect\, collaborate\, and push the boundaries of animated storytelling”. \nMost of the artist led workshops are hands-on and/or quite technical\, which justifies the extra costs applied to them. But the standard AED 139 four-pass does give you access to 30+ talks\, panel discussions and roundtables; lots of activations (which usually means people trying to sell you stuff\, but in entertaining fashion); and three live music gigs\, include one “live anime concert”. There’s also a “shared creative space to draw and collaborate”. And of course there will be many screenings.

SUMMARY:2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Abu Dhabi has been chosen as the host city for the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize – “in recent years\, the UAE’s growing presence in the global arts and culture landscape\, and openness in supporting the works of international architects provides a backdrop of newness\, reflecting the diversity within our mission and the selection of our Laureates and Jurors\,” said Tom Pritzker\, director of the Pritzker Foundation. “As three iconic buildings\, each designed by Pritzker Laureates\, Jean Nouvel\, Norman Foster and Frank Gehry\, redefine the skyline of this city\, Abu Dhabi lends a natural extension to our programme.” \nThis lecture by Liu Jiakun\, 2025 Pritzker Prize Laureate\, will have the title “On Land: A Model For Community”. It will be followed by a panel discussion including his three immediate predecessors: Riken Yamamoto\, David Chipperfield\, and Francis Kéré. “An informal reception will follow.” Should be good.

SUMMARY:SFP Montage: day one
DESCRIPTION:SFP Montage is a series of special projects and initiatives linked to Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) festival that forges new associations among the works and expands their reach beyond Sharjah; two award-winning films from the seventh edition of SFP will be screened at NYUAD: The Screening Room on each of 3 and 4 May. Tomorrow’s films are fiction; this evening’s are both documentaries: \nSurveilling a Crime Scene dir Alana Hunt (2023\, 22 min) \nShot on Super 8mm\, this short examines the lives of non-indigenous people in Miriwoong Country\, Australia\, to frame colonisation as not only a historical phenomenon but also a continuous and present violence. English with Arabic subtitles \nCoconut Head Generation dir Alain Kassanda (2023\, 89 min: still above) \nEvery Thursday a group of students from the University of Ibadan organises a film club\, transforming a small lecture hall into a political assembly. Reclaiming the expression ‘coconut head generation’ – a derisive term for stubborn and brainless youth – the students assert their right to intellectual freedom while honing their critical voice. English\, Pidgin\, Yoruba and French with Arabic subtitles

DESCRIPTION:Theeb (‘Wolf’) is a young Bedouin boy living in a remote part of the Ottoman Empire in 1916. When his older brother has to escort a British officer across the desert\, Theeb tags along for the adventure – and experiences a greatly hastened coming-of-age on the perilous journey. \nThe film screens in dialogue with the ongoing Abdullah Al Saadi exhibition Sites of Memory\, Sites of Amnesia as part of a programme curated by researcher and scholar Rasha Salti that invites audiences to reflect on the intricate interplay between remembrance and forgetting\, evoking profound connections to collective and personal histories.
