SUMMARY:Sikka Art and Design Festival
DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of what is being presented as one of Dubai Culture’s flagship initiatives is back in Al Shindagha Historic District. We’re not sure exactly what you’ll get this year – the website wasn’t working when last we tried it\, though you may have better luck; there seems to be no overall directory/guide available; and the Instagram feed is busy but somewhat incoherent. \nStill\, we’re promised “a rich agenda filled with exhibitions\, programmes\, activities\, live performances\, visual arts\, unique culinary experiences and beyond … a celebration of art which focuses on supporting and showcasing the works of Emirati\, UAE and GCC-based artists”. \nWe do know that something over 40 public art pieces and installations will be displayed across 19 houses and en plein air around Al Shindagha. The festival programme has more than 450 workshops\, talks and panel discussions\, over 100 live performances\, 13 theatrical shows\, and six orchestral performances (among them performances by the Firdaus Orchestra\, the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra\, and the Dubai City Sound ensemble). \nThe last Sikka Art and Design Festival apparently attracted nearly 162\,000 visitors. “This year’s edition promises to raise the bar even higher\,” opines the press release. It must be worth checking out …

SUMMARY:Sweeney Todd
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Sondheim’s multi award winner arrives for a week-long stint at Dubai Opera. The tale of a barber whose life was destroyed by betrayal and sets on a path to bloody vengeance is punctuated by dark humour\, shocking plot twists\, unforgettable melodies\, and a partnership to die for with Mrs Lovett and her “meaty” pies … \nWell worth catching\, even at what seem to us to be quite high prices; but then this is not a skimpy production\, and quality has to be paid for – we think this is the highly rated Sydney Opera House production from 2023\, with a cast of 18 including Ben Mingay and Antoinette Halloran in the lead roles. \nThere are 8pm performances every day between 1 and 8 February\, and a 2pm matinée on 1 February as well.

SUMMARY:Sharjah Biennial 16 opening programme
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Alia Swastika\, Amal Khalaf\, Megan Tamati-Quennell\, Natasha Ginwala and Zeynep Öz\, Sharjah Biennial 16 features works by more than 190 participants\, including over 200 new commissions. \nThe SB16 Opening Programme weekend\, which runs at locations in Sharjah City\, Al Hamriyah\, Al Dhaid\, Kalba\, Al Madam and other venues across Sharjah\, will give us a chance to see how the curators have approached their theme – ‘to carry’. That’s described as “a multivocal and open-ended proposition … The ever-expanding list of what to carry\, and how to carry it\, is an invitation to encounter the different formations and positions of the five curators as well as the constellation of resonances they have gathered”.  What do we carry when it is time to travel\, flee or move on? What are the passages that we form as we migrate between territories and across time? What do we carry when we remain? What do we carry when we survive? \nSo sB16 curatorial projects reflect on what it means to carry change and its technological\, societal\, animistic or ritualistic possibilities. “As carriers of different processes and offerings\, the curators have cultivated their projects together and apart\, allowing room for listening\, mutual support and the sharing of resources.” \nSB16 runs to 15 June. SUMMARY:El Norte | The North: dir Gregory Nava (1983)
DESCRIPTION:“A Grapes of Wrath for our time” said critic Roger Ebert of this lovingly rendered\, heartbreaking story of hope and survival.  After their family is murdered by the government during a civil war massacre in Guatemala\, brother and sister Enrique and Rosa flee north through Mexico to the United States – where they find life is not what they’d hoped for. Gregory Nava’s groundbreaking social realistic narrative was also the first independent film to be nominated for an Academy Award for screenwriting. Powerful stuff\, and not to be missed.
