SUMMARY:Nowhere And Everywhere At The Same Time No.2
DESCRIPTION:Now this is an unexpected offering from Berklee: the revised version of William Forsythe’s Nowhere And Everywhere At The Same Time\, a kind of DIY performance piece that encourages you to experience space\, movement\, other people\, the absence of other people … \nThe original version was a dance piece created at Tate Modern in 2009\, devised by the eminent choreographer and performed by the dancers of his company. The Tate’s Turbine Hall was filled with dozens of metal pendulums suspended from wire rope; the dancers used the pendulums as catalysts for movement\, their bodies reacting to the objects\, and each other\, as they moved through the field. Forsythe has commented that the work’s choreography is “based on observations; so the dancers are observing the room\, observing each other\, and producing conclusions or expressing their observations”. By conceiving the Turbine Hall as both ‘nowhere and everywhere at the same time’\, this performance sought to unleash the kinetic and metaphorical potentials of the space. \nThe No.2 version does not involve a specific choreography or indeed dancers as such. The field of moving pendulums is retained\, and visitors are invited to move through them at will. In doing so\, they effectively generate an infinite range of individual choreographies. As the Berklee puts it\, “The spectators are free to attempt navigation in this statistically unpredictable environment but are requested to avoid coming in contact with any of the swinging pendulums. This task\, which automatically initiates and alerts the spectator’s innate predictive faculties\, produces a lively choreography of manifold and intricate avoidance strategies …” \nThe piece is accompanied by two of Forsythe’s short films. Solo (1997) is a performance for the camera by Forsythe himself that has close-ups and rapid cuts of his twisting body contrasted with overhead shots that capture his movements across a starkly lit stage. Antipodes I/II (2006) consists of two videos shown on facing screens suspended at different heights; on the raised screen\, Forsythe attempts to hold on to a table attached to the ceiling\, while in the second video he moves between two tables resting on the floor. The result\, which apparently dramatises Forsythe’s childhood belief that someone traveling to the South Pole risked falling off the planet\, subverts the relationship between embodiment and gravity. \nShould be fun. The performance/installation/movement piece is open between 8 November and 18 December; you need to book a one-hour time slot between 10am and 8pm (there is a maximum of 50 people per time slot so you should get the one you want).

SUMMARY:Sharjah Film Platform 6
DESCRIPTION:The sixth edition of Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival\, which runs from 8 to 17 December\, features more than 50 films from around the world – a range of independent cinema and experimental filmmaking that “foregrounds the transformative role of cinema in our culture and community”. \nSome 30 of them are in the SFP6 Competition section for the Sharjah Film Platform Awards; all UAE premieres\, these films will be followed by Q&A sessions with the directors. \nSFP6 also offers a series of screenings that highlight noteworthy films produced in and around the region. This Out of Competition section includes Amjad Al Rasheed’s fiction feature Inshallah a Boy (2023) on 15 December and Sonia Ben Slama’s documentary Machtat (2023) the following evening. Three others we’d recommend: Goodbye Julia (dir Mohamed Kordofani\, 2023)\, screening on the opening evening; the powerful For My Country (dir Rachid Hami\, 2022: still above) showing on 10 December; and Animalia (dir Sofia Alaoui\, 2023) on 16 December. \nIn parallel with the film screenings is a series of public programmes that this year focuses on ideas of solidarity and resistance. Featuring regional and international filmmakers\, the panel sessions and talks will touch on the Nakba and the Palestinian experience of rupture\, African cinema and the postcolonial condition as well as the ways in which cinema can convey the spirit of defiance in the face of oppression. \nThe talks programme is at Sharjah Institute of Theatrical Arts in Al Mureijah Square. Download the full details here. \nThe accompanying SFP Industry Hub for industry professionals again has a Pitching Forum\, a feature scriptwriting competition with an open call; the Script Lab\, a professional scriptwriting course; and an annual initiative to support regional and international film distribution. \nSFP6 screenings take place in Mirage City Cinema\, SAF’s open-air theatre in Al Mureijah Square\, and VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. Films are booked individually at AED 15 each (there doesn’t seem to be a multi-screening pass). \n

SUMMARY:Slava’s Snowshow
DESCRIPTION:Two final performances for one of the best seasonal shows around – a whimsical blur of laughter\, awe\, and magic that has already been seen by more than 12 million theatre-goers around the world\, reportedly receives a standing ovation following every single performance\, and so far has clocked up more than 25 international awards (among them a West End Laurence Olivier award for Best Entertainment\, a Drama Desk Award in New York\, and a Broadway Tony nomination). \nIt’s also wowed the critics: “the most fun in the theatre you will ever experience” (The Guardian) and “a thing of rare theatrical beauty not to be missed” (Daily Telegraph). The New York Times came up with “simply thrilling … unmissable … induces waves of giggles and sighs of pleasure”. And the Financial Times gave us “Slava’s Snowshow achieved something I’ve rarely seen: a spontaneous eruption of playful energy which lifted the entire audience in a bubble of pure delight. Magic!” All of which is spot on. \nEssentially it’s a group of clowns wearing green and one clown wearing yellow\, in “a celebration of winter and snow”. But Slava Polunin\, the show’s creator\, has created something special from the fabric of dreams and fairy tales in a kaleidoscope of events\, colours\, sounds\, “spaces” and “times”. As Variety put it\, “Slava’s Snowshow is to clowning what Cirque du Soleil is to the circus … Slava’s Snowshow is as theatrical as it is simple\, as involving as it is inspiring”. \nThere are performances at 3pm and 8pm. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Rusted Stars
DESCRIPTION:The final performances for this science fiction musical\, said to be the first original musical play to be produced in the UAE: long ago people left an uninhabitable earth to make a life in the stars. That sort of worked\, but after centuries the infrastructure of their colonies is in disrepair and standards of living are crumbling. Then one day they receive a transmission from earth: could it be worth returning? Could it be a home for humanity once again? The investigators find there a primitive agrarian society led by the young Queen Amara\, absolute ruler of a feudal society and the figurehead of the Earth Mother religion. Will she and her people be prepared to share the only planet they’ve known\, with the people who once abandoned it? \nThe idea and production is by Rohan K Jain; Tariq Abouzeid directs; the score is by Caio Kehyayan\, book by Terry Newman\, lyrics by Newman and Ty Christian. \nThere are performances at 2.30 and 8pm. \n  \n  \n
