SUMMARY:Nowhere And Everywhere At The Same Time No.2
DESCRIPTION:Now this is an unexpected offering from Berklee: the revised version of William Forsythe’s Nowhere And Everywhere At The Same Time\, a kind of DIY performance piece that encourages you to experience space\, movement\, other people\, the absence of other people … \nThe original version was a dance piece created at Tate Modern in 2009\, devised by the eminent choreographer and performed by the dancers of his company. The Tate’s Turbine Hall was filled with dozens of metal pendulums suspended from wire rope; the dancers used the pendulums as catalysts for movement\, their bodies reacting to the objects\, and each other\, as they moved through the field. Forsythe has commented that the work’s choreography is “based on observations; so the dancers are observing the room\, observing each other\, and producing conclusions or expressing their observations”. By conceiving the Turbine Hall as both ‘nowhere and everywhere at the same time’\, this performance sought to unleash the kinetic and metaphorical potentials of the space. \nThe No.2 version does not involve a specific choreography or indeed dancers as such. The field of moving pendulums is retained\, and visitors are invited to move through them at will. In doing so\, they effectively generate an infinite range of individual choreographies. As the Berklee puts it\, “The spectators are free to attempt navigation in this statistically unpredictable environment but are requested to avoid coming in contact with any of the swinging pendulums. This task\, which automatically initiates and alerts the spectator’s innate predictive faculties\, produces a lively choreography of manifold and intricate avoidance strategies …” \nThe piece is accompanied by two of Forsythe’s short films. Solo (1997) is a performance for the camera by Forsythe himself that has close-ups and rapid cuts of his twisting body contrasted with overhead shots that capture his movements across a starkly lit stage. Antipodes I/II (2006) consists of two videos shown on facing screens suspended at different heights; on the raised screen\, Forsythe attempts to hold on to a table attached to the ceiling\, while in the second video he moves between two tables resting on the floor. The result\, which apparently dramatises Forsythe’s childhood belief that someone traveling to the South Pole risked falling off the planet\, subverts the relationship between embodiment and gravity. \nShould be fun. The performance/installation/movement piece is open between 8 November and 18 December; you need to book a one-hour time slot between 10am and 8pm (there is a maximum of 50 people per time slot so you should get the one you want).

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Art
DESCRIPTION:The fifteenth edition of Abu Dhabi Art\, which runs 22-26 November 2023\, will once again be the largest yet – there will be 92 gallery booths (a few galleries are in more than one section). They include 37 new and 55 returning galleries\, and they come from a total of 32 countries; 18 of them are from the UAE\, with Georgia\, Mexico\, Brazil\, Singapore\, and Chile represented at the fair for the first time. \nThe gallery roster represents a sizeable increase on last year\, which had 78 galleries. Abu Dhabi Art’s director Dyala Nusseibeh said that this year “represents a significant moment in the fair’s history … We are delighted to be able to attract such a diverse range of artists and galleries from around the world”. \nShe added that the growth was due in part to the work of Abu Dhabi Art’s global gallery representatives. Those are responsible for selecting/inviting galleries in four different sections – three geographies (Hong Kong\, North Africa and West Asia\, and Latin America) plus one for ‘Sustainability’. \n“The presence of so many new galleries at the Fair signifies how dynamic the local and regional art market has become over the last 15 years. By working closely with curators\, gallery representatives\, galleries and artists\, we are also ensuring that our gallery presentations offer unparalleled access to art histories and research\, ensuring visitors have the opportunity to better understand these wide-ranging global positions.” \nThe meat of the fair\, the Modern & Contemporary section\, will have 40 galleries. \nThe 2023 public programme includes commissions for Almaha Jaralla\, Samo Shalaby and Latifa Saeed in the Beyond Emerging Artists strand. The 2023 Gateway exhibition\, entitled Maqam\, is a show for Emirati artist Hashel Al Lamki. And works for sites across the emirate have been commissioned from Nujoom Al Ghanem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim. \nThe fair’s Visual Campaign Artist for 2023 is Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim – noted for his commitment to the environment and natural beauty of his birthplace\, Khorfakkan. The Visual Campaign Artist is tasked with creating the fair’s visual campaign\, and the chosen images are then used across marketing materials to define the identity of the fair. \nAbu Dhabi Art is at the Manarat Al Saadiyat as usual\, open 5-9pm 2-9pm for general admission on Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 November. Entry is free\, but you need to preregister via the website to get a complimentary ticket. \n  \n  \n

It’s been refocussed at short notice on Gaza and related issues\, in particular with a major exhibition in Concrete. The full programme is here\, but we’ve picked out some highlights; most events are free but many require preregistration because space will be limited. \n\n20 Nov 5pm to 10pm Alserkal Lates \nThere are more than 15 new gallery exhibitions across the Avenue staying open into the evening\, along a couple of guest galleries which will be open for the week – Gazelli Art House in warehouse 45\, Iris Projects in warehouse46. The residents of the Fall 2023 cycle at Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be hosting open studios\, and the retail and F&B outlets will be open late\, too. Alserkal Lates is always a pleasure. \n\n20-26 Nov 10am to midnight On This Land \nA “triangulated response” by the Palestinian Museum\, Barjeel Art Foundation\, and Alserkal Arts Foundation\, this exhibition actually opens at 6pm on the evening before; it brings together the digital archive of The Palestinian Museum and works from the Barjeel Art Foundation’s collection with the aim of “harnessing the power of spontaneous collaboration not only to protect what is being silenced\, but to generate a triangulated and amplified response … [the exhibition] opens an unexpected window onto Gaza to prompt a collective imagination of a possible future through the prism of a past made manifest.”. There are guided tours of the exhibition at 3.30pm every day. \n\n20 Nov 5pm 6pm 7pm | 25 Nov 7.30pm 8.30pm | 26 Nov 6pm 7pm Slow art walks \nReflective gallery tours that last about an hour; a really successful way to see the galleries – interesting\, informative\, unstressy. \n\n20 Nov 9-10pm Farha \nDirected by Darin J. Music\, narration and movement “translates its melodic and experimental character in a dynamic performance”. \n\n22 Nov 7.30-9pm Gaza Mon Amour \nDirected by Arab & Tarzan Nasser\, this film was Palestine’s official submission to the Oscars in 2019; based on a true story\, it’s a charming\, reflective film about 60-year-old Gazan fisherman Issa and his secret love for the dressmaker Siham. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n23 Nov 4pm to 6.30pm Majlis Talks \nTitled Fierce Grace\, curated by Mari Spirito of Protocinema\, these five 30-minute sessions will see conversations with curator Duygu Demir\, artist Stéphanie Saadé\, artist Marianne Fahmy\, and author Kaya Genc. Topics range from attention to the overlooked details of life (like the skin cells left on our phone’s touch screen)\, to unlearning social conditioning\, futurism on rising seas\, invisibility as a means of survival\, and interconnecting across geographies. \n\n25 Nov 8pm-9.10pm Foragers \nShot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, Jumana Manna’s film uses fiction\, documentary and archival footage to depict the dramas around the traditional practice of foraging for wild edible plants\, deploying wry humour and a meditative pace to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs.
