SUMMARY:Andrew Schneider: N O W I S W H E N W E A R E (the stars)
DESCRIPTION:This immersive theatrical installation uses nearly 5\,000 points of lights and hundreds of speakers (496-channel sound) to create an interactive theatrical cosmos where viewers become active explorers\, discovering the traces of themselves in light\, the universe\, and those who have been here before us. An unseen narrator guides you through a darkened space\, the light points responding to the presence and the movements of each individual … \nYou can sign up for a Guided Journey for up to eight people (45 minutes or so) or get an entry time for the Open Universe self-guided installation (up to 40 people\, go at your own pace (up to an hour). It’s free\, but pre-register for a ticket – and most of the eight-person Guided Experiences have already sold out. There are sessions between 2.30 and 5.30pm and 7-11pm every day between 5 and 10 September.

SUMMARY:Josh Rowell: Moral Codes
DESCRIPTION:Rowell’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East\, curated by Celine Azem\, invites viewers to contemplate the moral codes that shape our society. At the heart of the exhibition lies an installation of Rowell’s Painting Language series\, interpretations of Aesop’s fables that invite us to reflect on the significance of ethical principles in shaping our individual and collective actions. Other works from this series reflect on ancient mathematics and geometry\, merging art\, technology\, and language\, blurring the boundaries between the digital and the tangible. \nAlso on show is Rowell’s Mosaics series\, drawing inspiration from trending comments found on various social media platforms and reflecting the ephemerality of online phenomena; and the Virtually Fragile series sheds light on the fragility of our digital connectivity\, depicting a loss of connectivity that prompts us to contemplate our dependence on the digital realm and the potential consequences of its disruption. \nTo 7 November.

SUMMARY:Betsayda Machado and La Parranda el Clavo
DESCRIPTION:Building on their participation in The Arts Center’s virtual online season in 2021 with the world premiere of their documentary Las Cantoras\, Betsayada Machado leads her group in close harmonies\, polyphonic melodies and call and response – a spirit-shaking celebration of Venezuela built on propulsive traditional drumming. The UAE’s Liwa Maritime Ensemble (below) opens the evening with a very different performance of traditional Emirati music laden with East African influences.
