SUMMARY:Ever-Present
DESCRIPTION:A group show by six African artists presenting “a captivating and thought-provoking collection of artworks that highlight the diverse landscapes and thematic intersections of African art across generations … The exhibition offers a glimpse into the complex histories\, traditions\, and values that have shaped the artists and the communities they represent. The selected artists and artworks delve into profound themes and challenge conventional thinking in their respective works\, exploring the connections between past and present\, investigating how personal and collective histories continue to shape our understanding of the world …” An interesting-sounding attempt to capture the essence of Africa through “an exploration of the interplay between cultural heritage and the forces of globalisation”. \nThe artists: \n\nJ.K. SUMMARY:Talal Al Najjar\, Ziad Al Najjar: Symbiotic Hyperreal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition marks the first duo show for Emirati brothers Talal Al Najjar and Ziad Al Najjar. They each maintain a distinct individual artistic practice\, but developed in close proximity to one another; and both draw upon their relationship to their surroundings\, particularly Dubai\, where they grew up. \nViewed together\, the works of Talal and Ziad create a quality of simulation\, unrealness\, or hyperreality (the inability to distinguish from a simulation of reality). From the moment that the viewer enters the space\, they are watching\, but there is also a sense of being watched. \nTo 14 June. \nThis exhibition is curated by Tala Nassar; it marks Nassar’s final project at The NYUAD Art Gallery\, before departing to pursue graduate study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

SUMMARY:Monty Python's Spamalot
DESCRIPTION:A second performance of this highly irreverent musical parody of Arthurian legend\, based on the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail with lyrics and book by Python’s Eric Idle and a score by Idle and John Du Prez. It’s funny and clever\, and it’s brought to us by the Abu Dhabi Choral Group\, the UAE’s longest established amateur music group – now in its 45th season\, and with more than 75 shows in its back catalogue. Recommended. \nThere are further shows at 7.30pm on 2 and 3 June\, with a 2pm matinée on 3 June too.

SUMMARY:The Addams Family – A New Musical
DESCRIPTION:MTDXB (Musical Theatre Dubai) is – as far as we know – the first and only adult theatre group in Dubai to specialise in musicals. Formed in 2021\, they have done four performances to date\, and they tend to be best-of cabaret-type shows like this one; but the team has managed to gather an impressive addressbook of once-pro and semi-pro performers\, mostly from Britain\, who between them can boast of a wealth of experience. \nSo this full-scale exercise should be good. It’s an original story (book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice\, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa) that provides a sequel to the original Addams Family story. Wednesday Addams\, the ultimate princess of darkness\, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet\, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough\, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now\, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife\, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents … \nClaire Bennett directs\, the musical director is Adam Laird. The production has a cast of 50\, a live 12-piece band\, and a “stunning” professionally built set. We’re promised “a number of showstopper songs” (when we saw a version of the show a while ago we counted around 20 of them\, and particularly liked the Move Towards the Darkness finale) “and elaborate dance routines”. Sounds like a load of fun … \nThere are further performances at 7.30pm on 2 and 3 June\, with a 2.30 matinée on the Saturday too.
