SUMMARY:Still Dancing – a True Story of a Parkinson’s Hero
DESCRIPTION:Third Half Theatre and Movement Mantra are reprising their original 2019 dance-theatre production to raise awareness about Parkinson’s Disease. \nMovement Mantra ‘s founder\, movement coach Vonita Singh\, has been championing the Parkinson’s cause in the UAE for the last 10 years. Her 2019 production tells the real-life story of her father whom she lost to Parkinson’s in 2009; director (and founder of Third Half Theatre) Sanjeev Dixit said that while it is a play about Parkinson’s\, at the heart of it is simply the story of a family – “a family like yours and mine\, with the same hopes and dreams … Still Dancing is essentially a portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of the human spirit”. \nKathak dancer Pali Chandra has choreographed the dance elements\, which will be performed by young dancers from her ensemble Gurukul. \nThe project is supported by German Neuroscience Center in Dubai and NY-based Dance for PD. There’s a second show on 27 May.

SUMMARY:Black Grace: Paradise Rumour
DESCRIPTION:This premiere by the New Zealand contemporary dance company Black Grace was commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation for SB15; it’s a development of the company’s 2009 work Gathering Clouds\, which responded to prejudice and xenophobia against Pacific migrants in New Zealand. Asking ‘how far have we really come since then?’\, Paradise Rumour deals with personal and collective memories and experiences of the Pacific Island community\, starting with the arrival of the missionaries. \nFounded in 1995 in Auckland by artistic director Neil Iermia\, a dancer and choreographer of Samoan descent\, the company incorporates elements of contemporary dance into Indigenous Samoan and Maori movement patterns. Informed by the narrative traditions of the South Pacific\, their performances engage audiences with a gamut of musical genres\, from Bach and Vivaldi to Samoan hip hop to the electropop stylings of Lorde; their group’s choreographic range juxtaposes the dynamism of high-paced acrobatics with the vulnerability of theatrical narrative\, braiding these elements together into a universal physical language. \nRecommended. Admission is free\, but space is limited and prior booking is advisable.
